Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly identified Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris as the first player he would want to sign if he became the new manager of Nice. Pochettino is claimed to be in talks with Nice following the club’s poor start to the season in Ligue 1.
Lucien Favre only returned to become the French side’s manager in June. However, he has won just two of his first eight league matches of the season.
Nice have also drawn their opening two matches in the Europa Conference League. Pochettino has been out of work since being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
French outlet Media Foot Marseille claims the Argentine is in talks about potentially replacing Favre. And discussions have already been held about potential signings.
Pochettino would want to make signings as early as the January transfer window. And one of the first players he has identified is Spurs star Lloris.
Lloris played under Pochettino at Tottenham for five years between 2014 and 2019. It was Pochettino who appointed the goalkeeper club captain in 2015.
Nice signed Kasper Schmeichel from Leicester in the summer. However, it appears Pochettino wants further improvement in that area of the pitch if he takes over.
Lloris only signed a new contract at Tottenham in January to keep him in north London until the end of the 2023/24 season. However, he turns 36 on Boxing Day.
A move to Nice would be a return to where it all began for Lloris. He first joined the club’s academy in 1997 and came through to make his professional debut in October 2005.

He made 78 appearances for Nice before joining fellow French side Lyon in 2008. Whether Spurs would be open to letting him leave remains to be seen, especially midway through a season.
Fraser Forster was signed in the summer but the England international is very much a back-up only for Antonio Conte. Lloris has played all nine games so far this season for Spurs.
However, he has picked up a thigh injury which has ruled him out of France’s Nations League matches against Austria and Denmark. Lloris could therefore be a doubt for the trip to play north London rivals Arsenal on October 1.
He has made over 400 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions since joining over a decade ago.
