Real Madrid possible line up with Ronaldo and Mbappe after squad rebuild

Real Madrid could make a swoop for Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe and also seal a sensational return to the Bernabeu for Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer transfer window.

As previously reported by The Mirror, the Spanish giants are keen to bring back their all time top goal scorer at the end of the season. Ronaldo made the £12.85million switch to United from Italian champions Juventus last summer and has contributed to 17 goals and three assists in his 28 Premier League appearances upon his return to Old Trafford.

Madrid are understood to be keeping a close eye on United's current situation, as a major summer rebuild is on the cards, with the arrival of Ajax manager Erik ten Hag. The 37-year-old playmaker initially penned a two-year deal with the option of an extra year but after a huge number of changes behind the scenes, it's unclear whether ten Hag will see Ronaldo's immediate future at Manchester, given he is reported to be looking at revamping United.

It is understood that Carlo Ancelotti's side would be willing to take the striker back, while offering him a decent amount of playing time. Ronaldo scored 450 goals for Los Blancos during his nine year spell at the club between 2009 and 2018. While Mbappe is out of contract at the end of the current season, with discussions over a new deal reportedly broken down.

Daily Star Sport looks at how Ancelotti's side may shape up ahead of next season…

Goalkeeper

The goalkeeping department currently consists of Thibaut Courtois and Ukrainian Andriy Lunin. Courtois signed a new five-year contract last summer, which will see him at the club until 2026. Meanwhile Lunin, who became the first Ukrainian to play for Madrid, is contracted at Bernabeu until 2024.

Although the squad is light in this department, it has been reported that the club already have an agreement in place for teenage Mallorca goalkeeper Ferrán Quetglas, who is only 17 years old.

Defence

Madrid are well stocked in the defence department, but will lose club legend Marcelo this summer. Their defence currently consists of Daniel Carvajal, Eder Militao, David Alaba, Jesus Vallejo, Marcelo, Ferland Mendy and Nacho.

Without Marcelo, Mendy will likely be Madrid's first-choice centre-back, and Antonio Rudiger is expected to arrive on a free transfer at the end of his Chelsea contract. Former Bayern Munich man Alaba has made a brilliant start to life at the Bernabeu, and has formed a solid partnership with Militao.

Midfield

Ancelotti has Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Casemiro, Federico Valverde, Lucas Vazquez, Dani Ceballos, Isco and Eduardo Camavinga at his disposal in midfield. Madrid have also, meanwhile, been linked with a move to bring in Aurelien Tchouameni, who is also wanted by United.

Modric and Isco are coming to the end of their current deals however, running out this summer, but it seems Madrid chiefs are reluctant to let Modric go considering his incredible form this season.

If Tchouameni arrives this summer, it's likely he'll be used in the middle of midfield alongside Camavinga, Kroos and Casemiro. Madrid signing the French international would give Ancelotti another option to rotate in the middle of his midfield trio.

Attack

Should both Ronaldo and Mbappe come to the Spanish capital, Ancelotti will have a wealthy number of top-class options in attack. The current attackers are Eden Hazard, Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Gareth Bale, Vinicus Jr, Rodrygo, Mariano and Luka Jovic.

Jovic, however, seems destined to leave this summer along with Bale, and Hazard's future is uncertain having failed to make any sort of impact in Spain. Ronaldo and Mbappe joining would instantly go into Ancelotti's starting side, but would create a problem with Benzema.

Madrid usually play a front three, with Benzema playing through the middle. But with both Mbappe and Ronaldo joining, all three will be battling it out for the one solo striker spot in Ancelotti's system.
