  • But Paulo Fonseca said he is keen to sign both players to permanent deals

Roma head coach Paulo Fonseca is keen to sign on-loan duo Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to permanent deals in the summer.

The Premier League pair joined the Serie A club on-loan last summer, with Manchester United defender Smalling in particular impressing with 26 appearances in all competitions, including two goals.

Arsenal forward Mkhitaryan was out-of-favour with previous Gunners boss Unai Emery and it is unknown whether he could feature in Mikel Arteta’s plans next season – yet Fonseca wants both to stay in the Italian capital.

‘Chris is a great, great man, a great, great professional,’ the Roma boss told Sky Sports.

‘I would like Chris to stay. We are speaking. I don’t know if it is possible because of the situation with Manchester United, but I would like so much for Chris to stay here with us because he is very important.

‘He is a great player, a great man with a great attitude every day and for all of these reasons I would be very happy if Chris stays.’

In addition, the Portuguese manager praised Mkhitaryan’s impact at the club. The Armenian has scored five goals in 18 appearances in all competitions, and scored and provided an assist in the 4-0 win over Lecce on Sunday.

‘Mkhi during this season got some injuries but he is returning now and he is proving his quality,’ Fonseca divulged.

‘Let’s see. He is a player with great decisions on the pitch and I would also like to keep Mkhi in our team.’

Smalling’s eyecatching performances have grabbed the attention of England manager Gareth Southgate, who has travelled to Italy to watch the 30-year-old in action.

The United man last week outlined his desire to play for his country again, potentially returning for this summer’s European Championships.
