Ronaldo has told Man Utd hierarchy his stance if Rangnick gets job full-time

Cristiano Ronaldo has issued a warning to Manchester United chiefs about Ralf Rangnick after they started 2022 in the worst possible way with a Premier League defeat against Wolves.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winning forward has cut a frustrated figure in the most part since his return to Old Trafford despite managing 14 goals across his 21 appearances in all competitions.

The 36-year-old has made no secret of his desire to win major silverware on his return to England after leaving Juventus – but United look a long way from challenging.

With Ronaldo having just 18 months left on the contract he agreed back in August, he has made his thoughts over Rangnick abundantly clear to the board.

Although Rangnick is not thought to be under consideration for the permanent role, Ronaldo has made it clear that he would not be in support of the German's appointment.

Rangnick is expected to take up the role of 'Senior Football Advisor' on a two-year deal ahead of the 2022/23 Premier League season amid changes to backroom staff.

New chief executive officer Richard Arnold will be tasked with leading the search for a new manager with executive vice chairman Ed Woodward set to stand down from his role on February 1.

Mauricio Pochettino, Erik Ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers are all under consideration of the board, despite their current roles at PSG, Ajax and Leicester respectively.

Ronaldo captained United in the absence of Harry Maguire for the visit of Wolves on Monday, but drew a blank as his Portugal colleague Joao Moutinho cored the only goal of the game.

Before that fixture, the former Real Madrid forward had called for the club to get 2022 off to the right start and put their inconsistent form behind them.

He had written on Instagram after reviewing 2021: "I’m not happy with what we are achieving in Man United. None of us are happy, I’m sure of that.

"We know that we have to work harder, play better and deliver way more than we are delivering right now.

:Let’s make this New Year’s Eve a turning point of the season! Let’s embrace 2022 with a higher spirit and a stronger mentality. Let’s take us above and beyond, let’s reach for the stars and put this club right where it belongs! Join us, we’re counting on all of you!"
