Ronaldo hooked at half time and leaves stadium early – as his replacement scores

Cristiano Ronaldo came off at half-time on his Manchester United return and did not stick around to see the final result, leaving the stadium before full-time.

And his replacement, Amad, grabbed the only goal for the Red Devils in a 1-1 draw against Spanish side Rayo Vallecano in their final friendly before the Premier League season begins. The Red Devils showed glimpses of class as Erik ten Hag tries to install his methods but the same old errors remain.

But while the new United boss is desperate to drill in his philosophy, Ronaldo's transfer requests have handed him an unwanted distraction from his work. The Portugal international has told the club that he wants to leave this summer as he wants to play in the Champions League.

The 37-year-old has effectively been on strike, failing to show up to training and not flying with the squad out to Thailand and Australia for their pre-season tour. But with the season on the cusp of beginning, Ronaldo is back in red after starting against Rayo in a friendly on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford.

However, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner did not make much of an impact – instead missing an absolute sitter – before being hauled off at half-time. Amad, who came on to replace the forward, made a point to the new coach by scoring within moments of the second-half starting.

The lead did not last long, though, with the Spaniards equalising soon after. Not that Ronaldo would have known, who had already left the stadium before the match had even finished.

It throws fresh doubt over the former Real Madrid and Juventus star's commitment to Ten Hag's cause while his agent, Jorge Mendes, remains hellbent on trying to find his client a new club. There have been plenty of links but nothing concrete.

Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich have all been linked but none have taken up the offer to land Ronaldo. However, despite the lack of interest, it remains to be seen whether the frontman will be lining up for United come the first day of the season.
