Ronaldo is all smiles as he finally scores first goal of season for Man Utd

Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't help but break into a smile after scoring his first goal of the campaign for Manchester United against Sheriff Tiraspol.

Ronaldo has found opportunities limited since the arrival of Erik ten Hag in the summer, having only started two of United's first seven matches before the visit to Moldova. The Portuguese ace retained his place in the starting XI from last week's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad, and this time he made it count.

With the Red Devils already 1-0 up thanks to Jadon Sancho's well-taken opener, Ronaldo was presented with the chance to double his side's lead from the penalty spot after Diogo Dalot had been fouled in the box.

The 37-year-old needed no second invitation and duly sent Sheriff goalkeeper Maksym Koval the wrong way as he opened his account for the season. Ronaldo marked the moment by running to the corner and doing his trademark 'siuuu' celebration before embracing his team-mates with a big smile.

United fans were delighted to see Ronaldo back amongst the goals and even noticed the smile on his face after scoring. One excited supporter wrote: "Seeing Ronaldo smile>>>>>>."

While a fourth fan commented: "Ronaldo’s 'SUIIIIIII' celebration is and forever always will be We love to see it, King!! So happy you got on the scoresheet. The smile just says it all how much it meant to you @Cristiano."

Former United academy ace and now BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage spoke highly of Ronaldo's influence on the squad. He said: "When he came on against Arsenal I thought he played very well, he’s been very professional around the club.

"His aura with the younger players, the way he conducts himself at the training ground," he added. "Everybody can learn off him. For all the youngsters, you look at Iqbal, McNeil on the bench and all the youngsters who train with the team, to train with these types of players is amazing.

"They can’t speak higher enough of Eriksen, Ronaldo, Casemiro now coming in for these younger players – it is fantastic."

Sancho and Ronaldo's goals moved United up to second in Group E, three points behind Real Sociedad who defeated Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia 2-1 on Thursday night.
