Saul Niguez has revealed that he was flattered by links to Manchester United.

The Atletico Madrid and Spain midfielder has committed his future to the club following rumours surrounding the Premier League earlier in the summer, but he has now admitted that the interest was positive.

The 25-year-old has been a key figure in the plans of Diego Simeone over the past six seasons – having joined the club from rivals Real Madrid at the age of 11.

Niguez has won both the Copa del Rey and Europa League twice during his time with Los Rojiblancos, making 19 appearances for his country following his debut in 2016.

In an interview with Spanish outlet Marca, he said: “I am very flattered that a club like Manchester United or other teams that ask about me take me into consideration, for me it is very positive.

“And that strong people in those clubs speak well of you means that I am doing things well at Atletico Madrid.”

When asked if his current side get worried by the rumours, he added: “I think not, they have never been communicated to me from the club.”

When asked about the future, he continued: "I think these coming years will be very good for Atletico de Madrid.”

The comment put to the player was one from United legend Rio Ferdinand, who stated in April: "I like Saul Niguez, he's a very, very good player in midfield.”

The chances of that deal happen this summer are now over, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer adding Donny van de Beek to his playing squad earlier this month.

"I cannot begin to explain how incredible an opportunity it is to join a club with such an amazing history," he said.
