Sheringham names Shearer and Klinsmann as best strike partners – ignoring Cole

Teddy Sheringham has named the two best strikers he ever had the luxury of playing alongside – but there's no mention of ex-Manchester United team-mate and rival Andy Cole.

Sheringham scored over 350 goals in his career for the likes of United, Tottenham, West Ham, Portsmouth and Millwall.

He also earned 51 caps for England, scoring 11 times and playing a key part in their run to the Euro 1996 semi-finals.

The legendary frontman played alongside a host of stellar strikers throughout his career, but he has named former England colleague Alan Shearer and ex-Spurs star Jurgen Klinsmann as the best.

"I've obviously played with some top, top strikers in my career, but my answer is always the same whenever I'm asked who my favourite was. I can only ever narrow it down to two names," Sheringham said when speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes at the launch of their European Championships 5-a-side Bet.

"Alan Shearer is the best English centre-forward of our time, without a doubt, and then Jurgen Klinsmann, when he came to Tottenham, was just unbelievable.

"Both were very different, but I couldn't put one above the other.

"They were fantastic players, and for me to play off both of them, it just worked very, very well."

Sheringham's snub of Cole may not come as a surprise given the two endured a bitter 24-year feud which only came to an end in 2019.

Despite playing over 5,000 minutes of football together for United, and winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League, Cole admitted he had "animosity" for Sheringham because of an incident on England duty in 1995.

The United striker made his England debut that year by replacing Sheringham as a substitute against Uruguay, but he was left seething when his fellow Three Lions forward didn't shake his hand.

He told The Independent: “I walk on to the pitch, 60,000 or so watching. Sheringham is coming off. I expect a brief handshake, a 'Good luck, Coley', something. I am ready to shake. He snubs me.

“He actively snubs me, for no reason I was ever aware of then or since. He walks off. I don't even know the bloke so he can't have any issue with me. We're fellow England players, it is my debut and he snubs me.

"You know what my immediate thoughts were? 'Jesus Christ! How many people just saw Teddy Sheringham do that to me?' I was embarrassed. I was confused. And there you have it. From that moment on, I knew Sheringham was not for me.”
