Solskjaer singles out Man Utd star who was "absolutely superb" in derby

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has singled out Anthony Martial after leading from the front against Manchester City on Sunday.

It comes after a tactical masterclass at the Etihad that saw Manchester United halt their local rivals' 21-match winning streak.

But Pep Guardiola will be furious that his side almost threw the match from the first whistle after conceding a penalty after 30 seconds.

Gabriel Jesus was the perpetrator, fouling Martial as the Frenchman darted into the box.

Bruno Fernandes made no mistake from the sot, though Ederson did get a hand to it.

And City made another sloppy start in the second-half when Luke Shaw went unchallenged before doubling the scores in the 50th minute.

As for Martial, the former Monaco man was central to Solskjaer's plan to counter-attack.

And the Norwegian was over the moon with the forward, who has had to face criticism in recent weeks over his performances.

"I thought Anthony was absolutely superb today. He was more of the Anthony of old," Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

"He turns, gets hold of it, and to think he was a doubt this morning!

"Until two hours before the game, until after the warm-up to be fair, I wasn’t sure if he was going to play or not. So fantastic. That was the same with Luke."

Though the victory was a huge one for Solskjaer in terms of finishing in the top four, he has conceded that the title might be a step too far.

City's fine form has seen them launch themselves close to the Premier League crown, with defeat meaning they are still 11 points clear.

"They [Manchester City] are so far ahead you can't really think about anything but making sure we win our games and be better than last year," Solskjaer added.

"We were third so we want to move up the table of course.

"I'm delighted. We were on the front foot for 10-15 minutes but then the last half hour of the first half we played too much on the result. We had to get to half-time to get hold of everyone again.

"The second goal was magnificent. Luke just showed what he is about. He was a massive doubt this morning and had to go through a fitness test to play. What a performance."
