Spurs’ Bentacur lucky to still have hips after painful slip on skiddy surface

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentacur nearly snapped himself in half after a painful-looking slip against Burnley on Wednesday night.

With just six minutes gone, the Uruguayan was trying to press Burnley's Josh Brownhill but lost his footing on the slick surface and more-or-less did the splits.

He then keeled over, bellowing out in agony before clutching his knee as the club's physios ran onto the pitch.

The damage initially didn't look serious, and Bentacur re-joined the action, but he was eventually hauled off at half-time for Harry Winks after further assessment from medical staff.

"That looked really terrible! How is Bentacur still playing," one fan tweeted in response.

"Anyone who's not a professional footballer or a child would have torn an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] god damn watch that in slow motion," another wrote.

"His facial expression makes this so much worse," wrote a third.

A fourth took a different spin on things, commenting: "Decided to break-dance in the middle of a match – what a hero."

Burnley secured all three points thanks to a second-half goal from Ben Mee, just a few days after Tottenham produced a masterclass at the Etihad Stadium.

Bentacur joined Tottenham in January for a fee of around £20 million from Juventus.

The midfielder made over 180 appearances for the Italian giants over a four-and-a-half-year stint with the club, but had fallen down the pecking order following the summer signing of Manuel Locatelli.

Bentacur was joined in north London by former Juve team-mate Dejan Kulusevski, who signed for Antonio Conte's side on an 18-month loan.
