Steven Gerrard’s contract at Aston Villa sets up Liverpool return

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard may already have one eye on a return to Anfield after taking the reins as manager of Aston Villa, with key detail in his contract that would allow him to replace Jurgen Klopp in 2024.

Having guided Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title whilst remaining unbeaten, Gerrard opted to leave Ibrox for Villa Park following Dean Smith's sacking on Sunday.

The Villains sit 16th in the Premier League table, just two points clear of the relegation zone and have lost their last five matches.

Gerrard has penned a two-and-a-half-year deal at the Brummie-based club, which would see his contract expire at the end of the 2023/24 season.

It's coincidentally the same time Klopp's deal is set to conclude at Anfield.

The German gaffer has already confirmed he will not be signing a contract extension with Liverpool when his deal expires in June 2024, leading to speculation the job could be Gerrard's.

Klopp intends to take a year out from football to see if his love for the beautiful game is still burning as strong as ever.

That could leave the door open for Gerrard to return to his boyhood club and finally collect the one trophy that evaded him during his playing days.

A Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup winner, the former Scouse skipper was never able to land the Premier League trophy, with his famous slip against Chelsea well documented in handing the crown to Manchester City.

Since his departure in 2015 to the MLS though, Liverpool have ended their hoodoo.

After success in Europe the previous year, Jurgen Klopp guided his team to the one trophy Liverpool fans have been demanding for 30 years – the Premier League.

Though Gerrard will have to prove himself at Aston Villa if he is to land his dream job.

There is an expectation at Villa Park that the club should be challenging for a place in Europe.
