Sunderland midfielder Luke O’Nien has joked that he will not consider going to Rome for his honeymoon after upsetting Roma boss Jose Mourinho in a pre-season friendly.
Roma and Sunderland faced each other in Albufeira on Wednesday, and O’Nien certainly left his mark when he caught defender Roger Ibanez in the face with a stray elbow.
Mourinho was outraged by the challenge and stormed onto the pitch while Ibanez received treatment, calling for O’Nien to be sent off. O’Nien has finally responded to the incident on Twitter.

O’Nien has tweeted his response, saying he will avoid Rome for his honeymoon
‘Mrs: Shall we go to Rome for our Honeymoon?’ he wrote on Saturday night.
‘Me: I think we will give Rome a miss for a while!’
O’Nien did manage to avoid being sent off, much to the disgust of Mourinho, although he was booked in the 35th minute of the match.
He was perhaps wisely substituted at half time by manager Alex Neil, with Daniel Neil coming on in his place.
Mourinho was also seen talking to his opposite number Alex Neil about O’Nien’s challenge
Meanwhile, Ibanez was unable to make it to the break after his blow to the face, and he was replaced in the 44th minute by Riccardo Calafiori.
Roma went on to win the game 2-0 thanks to two goals in the final 15 minutes from Felix Afena-Gyan and Nicolo Zaniolo.
Ibanez was able to play the second half of Roma’s 2-0 win against Portimonense on Saturday, indicating that the facial injury he suffered in the Sunderland game was not a serious one.
