Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino says former Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa convinced him to move to Anfield and join up with manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Japanese forward joined the Reds from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m in the January transfer window, after impressing for the Austrian side in the first-half of the season.

Before signing for Liverpool, Minamino sought advice from former Manchester United man Kagawa about playing under Klopp – despite the midfielder turning out for Liverpool’s fiercest rivals.

Minamino told Liverpool’s official programme: ‘I spoke to Shinji Kagawa as he had played for Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund too.

‘Klopp talked to me about Shinji and Shinji talked about Klopp and from that I could sense that they had a really good relationship.

‘Shinji said that Klopp was one of the best coaches in the world and now that I am here and working for him I have also realised he is one of the best coaches around.’

Kagawa played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund for two seasons between 2010 and 2012, helping the Ruhr-land club to back-to-back Bundesliga titles before joining Sir Alex Ferguson’s United for a £17million transfer.

After a mixed two-year spell at Old Trafford, the midfielder rejoined Klopp’s Dortmund in 2014 and featured regularly during the German’s final season in charge at Signal Iduna Park.

Upon Minamino completing his transfer to Liverpool earlier this year, Kagawa sent his Japanese compatriot a good luck tweet, saying: ‘Congrats! You are starting the best challenge! Believe in yourself and do your best under the best manager in the world!”

Minamino also admitted that he spoke to Southampton defender Maya Yoshida before joining the Reds about the prospect of playing Premier League football.

‘I spoke to Maya Yoshida at Southampton but I didn’t ask him about Liverpool ,’ the forward added.

‘I just told him that I would be coming to the Premier League, but I never told him that it would be Liverpool!’
