Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller has tested positive for Covid-19 and will now miss his side’s Club World Cup final against Tigres on Thursday.
According to Sky Germany, the forward’s results came following a test after training on Wednesday ruling him out of the clash in Qatar.
FIFA and Bayern are yet to officially confirm the result, but it is now likely that the positive reading will also see the German forward miss the club’s Champions League clash with Lazio this month.
Thomas Muller will miss the Club World Cup final after testing positive for coronavirus
The Bayern Munich forward’s results came following a training session on Wednesday
The first leg clash with the Italian side takes place at the Stadio Olimpico on February 23 and upon returning to Germany, Muller will have to test negative for the virus before going into quarantine for 10 days.
Although Hansi Flick’s side will still be strong favourites to clinch the Club World Cup over the Mexican side, the loss of the German is likely to hinder their attack.
The German international was part of the side that laboured to a 2-0 victory over El Ahly in the semi-final on Monday, playing just over an hour before making way for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who could now replace him in the final at the Education City stadium in Al Rayyan.
The forward had played an hour in Bayern’s 2-0 semi-final victory over Al Ahly on Monday
There have been no reports of Muller feeling unwell and he was in good spirits on Monday
Muller’s early departure did not hint at a sign of fatigue though and admitted his side’s struggles came after having to get used to playing in front of spectators again before two goals from Robert Lewandowski sealed the win.
‘It was a strange situation in front of an audience, he told TZ. ‘It’s a little different from what we’ve been used to in the past few months.
‘They were only fans of Al Ahly, but it was all very friendly. We are glad we did the job.’
Muller’s absence for the key clash could now extend to the Champions League this month
Bayern stars could be without their forward for the last-16 first leg tie against Lazio
‘We missed making it 2-0 early. Al Ahly has pressed us in the meantime. But then we had Leroy’s play and Lewy’s goal — that’s how we imagined it.’
‘We achieved our goal and made it to the final of the Club World Cup. Now we want to win it too.’
Muller is the latest Bayern star to test positive for Covid, with Javi Martinez and Leon Goretzka having also contracted the virus last month.
Javi Martinez (left) and Leon Goretzka have also recently tested positive for coronavirus
Both players have since missed the club’s last two Bundesliga games against Hertha Berlin and Hoffenheim, while Martinez also missed out in a previous clash with Schalke.
Bayern reported that both players had otherwise reported good health and had been self-isolating at their homes.
As a result neither were selected for Bayern’s squad to travel to Qatar and compete in the Club World Cup.
