Thomas Tuchel’s comments on Aubameyang suggests Chelsea transfer plan

Comments Tuchel Tuchel made about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last year suggests Chelsea's interest in the Barcelona forward might not be as panic-driven as it first appeared.

The Blues are desperate for some firepower up front after letting Romelu Lukaku leave on loan, and with Timo Werner likely to follow him out the door, a new striker is high on the club's shopping list.

Nevertheless, they've spent the majority of the summer window chasing defenders, and links to Aubameyang seemed to come out of nowhere on Wednesday, but given Tuchel's history with the 33-year-old, there just might be a little method to the madness.

After Aubameyang was stripped of the Arsenal captaincy last season, Tuchel revealed that he still had "a very close relationship" with the striker, having managed him for two seasons at Dortmund.

The German coach said: "I think that he [Aubameyang] was a very important player for me, we had a very close relationship. When we meet it is still always very nice. I can only say the best things about Auba as a player and person."

Aubameyang was an absolute monster in Tuchel's side, scoring 39 and 40 goals in each of the two seasons the current Chelsea boss spent at the Westfalenstadion.

Tuchel left for PSG in 2017 and six months later Aubameyang was gone too, with Arsenal snapping him up for a club-record £56million.

The Gabon international spent the next two-and-a-half years banging in the goals for the Gunners, but his form fell off a cliff following a contract snafu, and when manager Mikel Arteta took the captain's armband off him mid-way through last season, he left for Barcelona.

Aubameyang's Camp Nou career got off to a bright start, but Robert Lewandowski's arrival has thrown his future into doubt again and with former coach Tuchel supposedly sniffing around, an improbable return to London might genuinely be on the cards.
