Timo Werner to Liverpool transfer makes ‘too much sense’ as Raheem Sterling claim made

Timo Werner has caught up with Raheem Sterling and joining Liverpool would make “too much sense” on paper, according to European football expert Gabriele Marcotti. Werner is heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer. The RB Leipzig man reportedly has a release clause of €60million (£50m) which expires in April this year.

Marcotti believes the Germany international would be a top signing for Liverpool as they look at long-term replacements for the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

“As for Timo Werner, the guy has a release clause, I’ve seen different numbers quoted,” Marcotti said on the Gab and Juls podcast.

“It used to be £20m, now I believe it’s £50m. I don’t understand why this stuff isn’t public by the way, because his agent knows and his agent will tell whatever club wants to bid for him so why keep it a secret anyway?

“On paper he would be a really good fit for Liverpool, on paper he’s younger than Salah, Firmino and Mane, who I believe are all 28 or in that bracket, 27-28.

“On paper it makes almost too much sense but that’s on paper.”

Marcotti believes Werner and former Liverpool winger Sterling are similar types of player.

He says Sterling had surpassed Werner in terms of ability but claims the German has now caught up with the 25-year-old.

“I didn’t [used to] like [Werner], you know he came up so young at Stuttgart,” Marcotti continued.

  • Liverpool in advanced talks with Timo Werner as mega contract offered

“I didn’t like him because he was diving and stuff.

“I remember a conversation with somebody, because I think he’s around about the same age as Raheem Sterling, and the argument was ‘who’s got the brighter future, Werner or Sterling?’.

“Now, this is Liverpool Sterling. Werner was, in terms of technical ability, a better player at the time, then I thought Sterling pulled ahead.

“Now, I don’t know, I don’t know. It’s just two phenomenal players who are just entering the prime of their careers and wherever they go let’s enjoy it.”

Meanwhile, transfer expert Ian McGarry insists Werner will become a Liverpool player this summer but says Bayern Munich are also tracking Reds forward Firmino.

“We have accurately and consistently reported that Werner will join Liverpool we believe this summer,” McGarry said on the Transfer Window podcast.

“I cannot report anything that I think changes that although interestingly news is that Roberto Firmino’s representatives have been contacted by Bayern Munich in the last 10 days with regards to ‘would he be willing to leave Anfield? Would he be interested in a return to the Bundesliga? And would he be interested in becoming part of Bayern’s rebuild?’ which of course they have been planning now since the beginning of last season.

“Firmino may fit in very well as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski who may well move on, potentially to MLS in the summer.”
