One man who would certainly back the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as Manchester United's new manager in Raphael Varane.

The former Real Madrid boss is one of the early frontrunners to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the Old Trafford helm after the Norwegian was sacked by United on Sunday morning.

Solskjaer saw his side slip to yet another humiliating defeat after they were thrashed 4-1 by Watford on Saturday, in what proved to be his final act as manager.

United's owners the Glazer family have reportedly told the club to push through attempts to secure Zidane as the club's new coach having seen the Frenchman achieve great success with Real Madrid.

During his time in the Spanish capital, Zidane guided Los Blancos to three successive Champions League crowns and two La Liga titles across two spells with sides that boasted current United stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Varane.

And if the French centre-back's recent comments are anything to go by, Varane would welcome a reunion with his fellow countryman and former boss should he chosen to take up the now vacant position as United manager.

Following Zidane's decision to bring a second spell in Madrid to an end in the summer, Varane told reporters: “My first reaction is that I feel proud for the last ten years. He took me from Lens to Real Madrid and I have learned a lot alongside him.

Is Zinedine Zidane the right man to turn Manchester United's fortunes around? Let us know in the comments section below.

"He is a coach that has a human side. He is a source of inspiration, not only for me but for many players who have met him. Seeing him leave is strange for me and for an entire generation of players at Real Madrid.

“It has been a pleasure to work with him, and it would be nice for it to happen again in the future. He is a great coach and a great human being.”

With United in disarray, Solskjaer gone and Zidane being pursued, it now appears as though Varane's wish for a reunion with his former mentor is closer than ever.
