Wayne Rooney has insisted that he would have "tried absolutely everything" if he was Gareth Southgate to tempt Jamie Vardy out of international retirement ahead of Euro 2020.
Vardy called time on representing England in August 2018 after the World Cup, having made his debut three years earlier and managed seven goals across 26 outings.
The Leicester forward has gone on to cement his status as a Premier League legend, scoring another 15 league goals this season despite turning 34 in January.
While the famous spat between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy rumbles on, Rooney has given his thoughts on his former International colleague ahead of the summer tournament.
Rooney wrote for the Sunday Times: "One man I wish was in Gareth’s squad is Jamie Vardy.
"I would have tried absolutely everything to lure him out of retirement for these finals.
"I know some people may be surprised at this, especially with the legal case between my wife and Jamie’s wife, but this is my honest football opinion.
"He may be 34, but Jamie is still a brilliant player, who was involved in 24 goals in the Premier League this season and would have been a great asset — not only as an impact sub but as a potential starter."
Back in March of last year, Vardy told Sky Sports when asked if he would consider returning to the fold: "Who knows? Gareth and I were both agreed that the door would still be open for whatever reason and then we would sit down and have a talk about it [if needed].
"We've not had the chat or anything yet and nothing has been spoken about. The lads (Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford in early 2020) are out injured, but they're looking to be back in time. So only time will tell.”
Southgate named a provisional squad of 33 players for Euro 2020 earlier this week, which will need to be cut down to 26 for the tournament.
His striking options include Kane, Rashford, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ollie Watkins and Mason Greenwood.
