What Pep Guardiola said to Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp after final whistle in Man City draw

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed he spoke with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after the 1-1 draw at the Etihad about the fact they want five substitutes. Across much of Europe that is the case because of the sheer volume of games this season.

Premier League clubs voted for three instead though, something Guardiola and Klopp are not happy with.

That was underlined by the fact Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold limped off with a calf injury in the second half.

And Guardiola says it means teams will be left with no alternative but to play for a draw in certain matches to not risk problems.

He said: “We talked about five substitutions. If people want to give microphones so we can give our opinions… English player… right-back is injured.

“There are many guys with many, many cases.

“Around the world five subs are key, but here it’s totally the opposite. We’ve talked about this many times.”

Klopp agreed with Guardiola and also said he had held talks with the Premier League on fixture scheduling.

That’s after Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer complained his side had to play on Saturday lunchtime after a trip to Turkey on Wednesday evening.

“I have spoken to the Premier League. No team on a Wednesday night play away in the Champions League should have the 12:30 kick-off on Saturday,” Klopp told BBC Sport.

“Okay Sunday no problem, not the 12:30 on Saturday because you wake up and play football. This is the recovery phase. Premier League has to change it, Sky, BT, you everyone has to talk to each other.

“If you want to have good football then give the boys a few hours more.

“We had after the triple header in the international break we played 12:30. The boys played Wednesday night in Peru, that is not possible. Somebody has to start thinking.”

City boss Guardiola also used the Alexander-Arnold injury as a way of making a point.

He said: “Trent Alexander-Arnold, international English player, now injured.

“Here we believe we are more special, we don’t protect the players, so that is why it is a disaster.

“This calendar came from a year before and I will demand for players to come back otherwise it will be difficult to maintain it.”
