Chelsea transfer target Ben Chilwell could become their second highest earner.

The Leicester City defender is all set to leave the club after Brendan Rodgers failed to guide them into the Champions League despite a fantastic start to the 2019/20 season.

Frank Lampard is set to offer just that as the England man considers his future, and a deal worth £50m could be completed within the next week.

The 23-year-old is set to be rewarded with a huge pay rise should he put pen to paper, and it could see him go joint second in the list of the highest paid players at Stamford Bridge.

Werner’s £170,000-per-week contract makes him the best-paid player at the club.

According to the Express, Chilwell is set to join both Kepa Arrizabalaga and N'Golo Kante on £150,000-per-week and Christian Pulisic comes in as the next highest earner on £145,000-per-week.

Another possible Chelsea signing over the next few weeks is Kai Havertz of Bayer Leverkusen, who could be paid 140,000-per-week, which is a fair chunk lower than Chilwell.

Lampard made no secret of his desire to strengthen his playing squad during the summer transfer window, having seen some areas that need improving during his debut campaign as boss.

He said back in June: “I’m certainly excited about the squad we’ve got, with the young players and if we can get a few additions for areas I feel we need.

“We didn’t bring in anyone in January, it didn’t work out to be right for us at the time, and last summer we couldn’t bring anyone in, so those windows are gone and we haven’t changed.

“So I am excited about the squad we’ve got, we can freshen up in the right areas we all know that.”

Lampard’s former rival Rio Ferdinand did have a warning about their spending plans earlier this month, in which he stated that they need a central defender.

While on BT Sport, he said: ”I think Frank's done his work early, that's good business [signing Werner and Hakim Ziyech].

"The players he's brought in are players that can play and know the level at Champions League football. I think they're an upgrade on some of the players he's got.

"Definitely adds competition, but I think now he has to look at the other end of the pitch because that's an area that when you want to win things, big trophies, which Frank will be wanting to do.

"That's the demands of that club, the foundations in the centre-half area, goalkeeper have to be strong."
