Bendigo races: $1.7 million colt Strategy to debut for trainer Lloyd Kennewell

Luckily three-year-old colt Strategy doesn’t know he cost his owners $1.7 million as a yearling.

The colt fetched that huge price tag at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year. His pedigree suggested he would make a Golden Slipper-type but that didn’t eventuate.

Strategy took longer than expected to get to the racetrack, heading back to the spelling paddock to mature after two trials in January.

“The price tag drops off them pretty quickly once they leave the auctioneer’s ring,” Strategy’s trainer Lloyd Kennewell said. “His attitude was probably a bit poor last time in for us but he’s improved in that area since and it’s a lot better this prep.

“He was just too keen and wanted to get everything over and done with too quickly.”

Kennewell will start Strategy’s career in a $35,000 maiden at Bendigo on Wednesday.

The Caulfield trainer was keen to dampen expectation of the son of I Am Invincible, who is a $5.50 chance TAB’s early market on the first race at Bendigo.

“He’s jumped out OK but it’s a low-key thing for us,” Kennewell said.

“We just want to see what he does and treat him like any other horse.

“We just hope he runs a nice race first-up.”

Kennewell said the $2.20 favourite Nantucket would be hard to beat but connections would get a good guide on where Strategy’s ability lies.

“He looks well but there’s a short-priced favourite in the race so we’ll just be happy to send him around and see what he does,” Kennewell said.

Regular stable rider Joe Bowditch will ride Strategy on Wednesday.
