Doncaster results: First two favourites win to the delight of crowd

Plenty of punters in the first crowd on a racecourse for six months were collecting their winnings as favourites took the first two races at Doncaster.

Latest Generation (8/11f) and Ataser (100/30f) passed the post in front on day one of the St Leger meeting.

Around 2,500 people watched live – and were advised not to cheer the horses on Covid-10 guidance – at the socially distanced trial event.

But racegoers returning to the track would prove to be short-lived, after Dr Rupert Suckling, Director of Public Health for Doncaster, decided to run the next three days of the fixture behind closed doors.

He made the call "on the grounds of public health and public safety."

It came after Prime Minister Boris Johnson limited public gatherings to just six people, rules which come into force in England on Monday.

Approximately 6,000 racegoers were due to attend the feature day of Doncaster's fixture on Saturday for the Pertemps St Leger.

Mark Spincer, managing director of Arena Racing Company’s racing division, said: “We have had confirmation this afternoon from the local authority that we will not be able to admit a crowd to the final three days of the St Leger Festival, Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 September.

“The race meeting will continue on a ‘behind closed doors’ basis, as per all other race meetings currently taking place in Britain."
