Jamie Kah overcomes vigour concerns en route to landing historic 100 winners: Mick Price

Mick Price is looking to be part of history on Wednesday by delivering Jamie Kah her record-breaking 100th Victorian metropolitan winner this season where she will have three rides for the Caulfield trainer at Sandown.

As one of her biggest supporters and a great admirer of her riding, Price says Kah has overcome hurdles to get to where she is today as Victoria’s premier jockey.

Price, who had Kah on loan as an apprentice for three months in Victoria, says when she arrived from South Australia later as a fully-fledged jockey there was a perception she wasn’t strong enough in the dying stages of a race to match it with the likes of Damien Oliver, Mark Zahra and Ben Melham.

Currently 36 wins ahead of nearest rival Damian Lane in the metropolitan jockeys’ premiership, those concerns are now well and truly over.

“She has developed a lot obviously, especially when it comes to riding horses out over the last 150m,” Price said.

“In the trainers tower there was an undercurrent of negativity towards how vigorous she was in the finish but that has been put to bed by Jamie.

“All those good riders have weight issues so they’re usually the bigger, stronger riders and they have the ability to get the best out of a horse in the finish. She has become one of them now in her own style.”

With three rides for the stable on the day, Price said it had become a juggling act in itself to get Kah on board, saying you need to present the right horses for her to ride.

Price is hoping to have been a part of the milestone earlier rather than later with Kah booked to ride Scientific in the first event of the day for the trainer.

After being ridden by Damien Oliver in her only four starts to date, the filly will get the services of Kah from barrier five for the first time.

“It is harder to get her on but we can, it is like anyone, if you have the horse you can get anyone on,” Price said.

“It would be nice if it was race one (for the 100th) then it is all done. Scientific will go good.

“Jamie won on Write The Score last start and it could be number 100 (for her) because if you watch it last start it should have won by two lengths instead of a short margin because she couldn’t get clear on it.

“National Choice will go good too, has drawn a nice gate in the right race for him.”

Price also revealed boom galloper Ayrton would return to his Caulfield stables on Tuesday as he attempts to set the three-year-old for a tilt at the super rich Golden Eagle in October.

“I’m not sure what the program looks like yet, I haven’t sat down to have a think about it,” he said.

“She (Kah) will have the first option of riding him this prep though.”
