Victorian racing fan Charlie Clemenger is $25,000 richer after finding himself top of the SuperCoach Racing pile after eight weeks of the fantasy game this spring.
Clemenger, who works in freight management, had to make all the critical calls on who would anchor his outfit Multi Mike, especially come the latter stages of the competition that included over 25,000 players.
And he felt that his big week that launched him into contention came last month.
“Probably Caulfield Cup/Everest day was the one,” he told Punters.com.au.
“I only had one in each race, and managed to have Verry Elleegant and Classique Legend.
“I don’t know where I was ranking-wise coming into that week, but it might’ve been the week I jumped into the top 10.
“So that probably changed the whole thing for me – I hadn’t really taken it seriously to that moment. I love my horse racing, but it was a bit of fun you do – but you jump that high, there’s a bit on the line so it becomes pretty important.”
Coming into last Saturday’s final round on Stakes day, he was parked in third spot – some 18 points behind Jason’s team ‘Just Imagine’ who held top billing.
But a final-round bonanza of 258 points, powered largely by a pair of Group One winners at Flemington, saw him leap above the top-two and claim the overall prize.

“I think I was third leading into the last weekend, and had a pretty good day to finish,” he recalled.
“I had no idea what the others up the top had done … probably after Bivouac won and he wasn’t my captain, I’m thinking ‘Oh gee, have I made the wrong choice there?’
“But after Arcadia Queen (Clemenger’s captain) won, I was quietly confident that I’d done it – but I had no idea what the others had done …
“We waited until about 9pm when the update came through, I was walking to the bottle shop at the time, and a mate of mine called me and said ‘You’ve done it’ so that was a very surreal moment.”
While undoubtedly the envy of everyone that’s had a crack at the game, most of us could probably relate to how Clemenger has fared in SuperCoach previously.
“Last year, I was about 300th halfway through and I had an absolute plonker week, and you’re no good after a plonker week – so it was me done!”
“My family, my old man and his old man have always owned horses, so I’ve always had a massive interest in it, so I love having a game like this which you can actually do it.
“It’s a ripper game – I’ll tell anyone how good it is now!”
So what plans has he got in store with his windfall? Well, the COVID-19 pandemic might’ve taken the wind out of the sails of any overseas endeavours at this stage.
“I wish I was being exciting … I’ve got a group of lads, we’ll do a lunch and celebrate,” he said.
“It’ll go towards a deposit on a house and maybe a bit of a holiday, but nothing outrageously exciting unfortunately.”
