Emma Raducanu was delighted to win the 2021 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, and showed her class as she sent a message of congratulations to the other five nominees including heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury and Olympic diving gold medallist Tom Daley.

The tennis star claimed the prestigious gong ahead of Daley in second place, and Adam Peaty in third. The other nominees were Fury , footballer Raheem Sterling and Para-cyclist Dame Sarah Storey.

Raducanu becomes the first first female tennis player to win the award since Virginia Wade in 1977.

Although she was unable to attend the ceremony, Raducanu appeared via video link to say a few words after winning the prestigious gong.

“Thank you, it’s such an honour to be amongst the nominees. Congrats to you for such an amazing year and all your achievements, the teen began.

“To win, it’s pretty amazing to me. I am really happy with this of course and I watched Sports Personality of the Year growing up, so I’m really humbled to join the amazing past winners.

“I’m very happy for British tennis that we managed to get this award again.”

She added: “Thank you so much to all the voters and all of the fans, for all of the support I received this past year, it’s been absolutely insane, especially the energy I felt at Wimbledon this year and playing in front of my home crowd. That was something I have never felt before so thank you very much.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to my team, thank you for all your hard work and efforts over the years. My team, my past coaches, the LTA, my family and friends, thank you so much.

“Congrats to everyone else’s teams as well, it’s definitely a team effort, so thanks to everyone and see you soon.”

Raducanu made history by becoming the first player to win a Grand Slam in the open era after coming through the qualifying rounds.

The teen holds the record for the fewest Majors played before winning a title and became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Wade won Wimbledon in 1977.

Due to her phenomenal exploits on the court, Raducanu became the British number one and is now inside the world’s top 20.
