Ex-Wimbledon champion preparing to marry fan that asked for selfie in the street

Garbine Muguruza announced her engagement during her hiatus from tennis. The former world No 1 is taking some time away from the sport and will now use her extended break to prepare to marry a fan who once asked her for a selfie in the streets of New York.

Muguruza recently revealed that she was engaged to Arthur Borges less than two years after a chance meeting with her husband-to-be. The Spanish tennis star has been with her model boyfriend since the summer of 2021 when they crossed paths while he was just a fan asking for a selfie.

The 29-year-old cemented herself as a future Hall-of-Famer after winning the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon a year later, also becoming the world No 1. However, she is currently taking a break from tennis and announced that she would be missing this summer’s Grand Slam events.

But Muguruza will have plenty to keep her busy after announcing her engagement, as she now has a wedding to plan. And the two-time Major champion has since opened up on the unusual way she met her husband-to-be when he was just a fan wishing her well for the US Open.

“My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk,” she told Hola. “I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome.’”

Borges clearly made an impression on the Spaniard after asking her for a selfie, as they continued to meet up throughout her time in New York – usually walking around Central Park. The model was in the city to work for Tom Ford but was still in awe of the then-top 10 tennis star.

The former world No 1 admitted that she was attracted to Borges because he wasn’t involved in the tennis world. Muguruza also has common ground with her fiance, who was born in Spain but has lived in Finland for most of his life.

“He’s a mix, like me,” she explained. “I’m half-Venezuelan and half-Spanish, so we understand each other. We share that feeling of being citizens of the world.” And he recently popped the question during a trip to Marbella, after less than two years of dating.

Recalling the moment he proposed, Muguruza said: “It felt weird. I was thinking something else and then when he proposed I started crying. I didn’t know how to react. I said yes in the midst of tears, it was very romantic.”

The former world No 1 announced their engagement to her 881,000 Instagram followers last week. Alongside a photo of the pair embracing with her ring on show, she wrote: “You had me at ‘Hello’.”
