French Open star Sloane Stephens has twice the net worth of ex-Sunderland spouse

Serena Williams bids farewell to tennis after US Open defeat

American tennis star Sloane Stephens stands to make a cool €2.3m (£1.8m) if she can win the French Open at Roland-Garros. But even if the world number 30 cannot reach the Paris final, as she did in 2018, she will still be considerably better off than her footballer husband, Jozy Altidore.

Stephens is into the second round of the clay court Grand Slam tournament after beating Czech star Karolina Pliskova 6-0, 6-4 and will now face Varvara Gracheva of Russia on Wednesday.

With one Grand Slam title to her name – the 2017 US Open – 30-year-old Stephens has enjoyed a solid career, with seven tour wins and a career-high ranking of number three back in 2018.

But her earnings off the court have been just as impressive as anything achieved on it, leaving her US Soccer international spouse in her wake.

The pair married in January 2022, when Altidore was still on the books of Toronto FC. Shortly after, he moved to New England Revolution on a free transfer, where he plies his trade today.

The 33-year-old earns around $2m per year from his Major League Soccer contract but endorsements with the likes of Apple, Puma and Adidas has helped to boost that total significantly.

After years of partnering with Adidas, the former Sunderland striker became known as the face of Puma in North America.

According to Filmsyappa, Altidore has a net worth of $10m – a figure that has increased steadily since 2018. But that is a drop in the ocean compared to his tennis-playing wife Stephens. Raised in a successful sporting family, she turned professional as a teenager in 2009 and hit the headlines when she defeated Serena Williams in the quarter-finals of the 2013 Australian Open.

But after overcoming a foot injury to win the US Open in 2017, the $3.7m she pocketed, as a result, was nearly half of her earnings up to that point in her career.

Lucrative endorsement partnerships have taken her wealth to a different level, however. She has deals with Nike, Mercedes Benz, Under Armour and Rolex.

The end result is a net worth of $20m, according to Celebrity Net Worth – double that of her husband Altidore, not that the 33-year-old veteran forward will be complaining too much.

The sporting couple were childhood friends in Florida but drifted apart as they chased careers in their respective sports.

But a reunion in 2016 put their lives together back on course. Alitodire told VOGUE: “I was doing a media scrum in the hallway during a US Mens National team camp. Sloane was there training for Fed Cup in Hawaii. Sloane turned the corner while having a loud conversation on FaceTime.

“We locked eyes and started talking during the scrum. We exchanged contacts and went to dinner after my game versus Iceland. The rest was history.”
